Joe opened at 400 then went to 420 and smoked both attempts. Then went to 435, got out of groove and couldn't lock it out. He wanted to play it safe with his first two attempts, he opened a little light. Luther had a hell of a meet and they both tied at 420. This was Joe's first raw meet and the most he ever lifted raw. Now, it's back into the shirt and on to 4x plus his body weight.

Thought someone mentioned Joe Mazza hit a 450 raw in training? Maybe that was at 181 weight. Nice work on the raw bench Joe Mazza.

10/6 Joe is doing one more 2 week cycle and will compete on 10/21. He will stay in the 165's and go after the all time record, then it's up to the 181's for Carpenter's bench meet. Joe had a great workout today. He wasn't in the right groove with his first attempt at 605, got a tough 4 reps. Rested, then tried 605 again and crushed 7 reps, was just throwing the weight up. The rev bench work is paying off. Then to 745 for a touch set, jacked it 3/4 of the way up and then drifted into the upright's, his tri's were shot from 2 sets at 605. Good workout.

Joe just missed his rev bench, his body weight is still down and his shirt is a tad loose. Should have a tighter shirt for the meet next week.

Yep, Joe hit 625 today on his opener. Just wasn't on for 660 or anything else. As I have discussed on this site in the past, it's tough to max twice within several weeks. Joe should have concentrated on either the Olympia or the all-time 165 record. One max per training cycle and that's it. Anyway, Joe is making progress again and should do quite well at Carpenter's meet in Jan.

I was able to learn quite abit about Joe and how he responds to his attempts. Joe is good for 2 attempts. For his body weight and the weight he is handling, after 2 attempts his CNS is shot. Olympia: prior to the Olympia Joe did 415 x 3 raw, but opened at 400. He opened to light. He then went to 420 and crushed it, but by then his CNS was done. 2 attempts at 400 or more raw at 165 just took to much out of him. Joe should have opened at 400-410 right to 435-440 IPA meet: I think Joe was on for that meet, but at 165 his shirt was to loose. He was in the same shirt that he benched 705 at the end of a workout, but his body weight was closer to 175. I like to gear everything around the 2nd attempt. What do you need to open with in order to make a jump right to your goal weight on your second attempt. Joe is pretty comfortable with 50-60 pound jumps in training, so if he would have opened at 610 or so then right to 660, but again the shirt I think was a bit loose. Ron did tighten a shirt up for Joe, but it was to tight. Once we dial in his warm-ups and his attempts, should make a run at 700 plus.
