I have been reading the JA Forum for several years. I'm 52, 242 lb class, and compete in single-ply bench competition. I used westside for my first three years of training and didn't have much in the way of progress. I was thinking about quitting. I remembered JA and applied just a couple principles. The first was recovering between workouts. Boom! Immediate and sustained progress. Band tension. Wham! Lockout strength shot up. Tight bench shirt. Of course it worked. Now I'm still not all that, but I won my last age-group meet and get PRs every workout (almost) and I believe I can go as far as my work ethic can take me.
Honestly, it's not strictly the JA Template. But the principles work for me and I appreciate everyone who has contributed to this program.

I hope you do well, would be interested in noting how you progress cos at 42 I am getting very anxious about my age and I really really want to keep progressing for a long time. I am heartened Jim is making progress and I think he is a little older than me.
I have been around pl a good while in spite of never really getting very strong and really hope JA will give me a big boost.

Wow does that sound young! Heck ya you can make progress! I just had to find the optimal training volume and intensity for me. My goal is to not only recover but super-compensate before I train bench again. I never workout if I'm still sore. I bench once a week and have one upper-back and triceps day. Hammer the band tension, do rep-maxes, work your shirt. And don't ever, ever listen to somebody telling you your too old.
