I know a lifter who has started to use Adequan (a horse osteoarthritis medicine) for his elbow pain. He is a 650lb+ bencher. Of course the expected response from a human doctor would be "stay away", but is there something similar that is perscribed for humans? Adequan is claimed to have some restorative powers and is not a COX-2 inhibitor like Vioxx and Celebrex. My knees are creaky from many years of football and one arthroscope each knee, which showed a few pieces of missing cartilege on the back of the patella. I took Vioxx occasionally, but of course can't get any more. Celebrex doesn't seem to work as well, and ibuprofin I am a little afraid of the liver issues if taken continuously. What do you think?

Hey, there, dammstrate! There are a few things you can do for osteoarthritis. NSAIDs, however, are something I would avoid at all costs, except for acute situations. NSAIDs are destructive to joint cartilage and inhibit protein synthesis. Some supps that will quench inflammation and help rebuild cartilage by providing the body with substrates it needs are: * Fish oil. Fish oil is high in Omega 3 fatty acids and are, by their nature, anti-inflammatory. Get any product that has measurable amounts of EPA and DHA per serving. I'd recommend 6g o EPA and DHA combined. I use a product by Health From the Sun. www.iherb.com has great prices. I buy liquid because I can handle the taste (add it to my tuna fish) and because it's cheaper. If you're worried about the taste, get capsules. You'll just have to take a lot of 'em. Take it once a day with your largest meal. * MSM. It's a fancy name for sulfur. I buy mine in powder form and add it to my protein shakes. Powder is cheaper than capsules. I buy mine by the pound from www.msm-msm.com. Start off with 1g, once in the morning, once at night. Day 2, 2g, once in the morning, once at night. Keep going up a gram a day until you're taking 5g in the morning 5g at night. Not only does it help with pain, it provides your body with the substrates it needs for repair. It will also help with your allergies if you have any. (grin) One word of warning, if you take it too late, it will keep you from sleeping. Take it at dinner time, no later. * Glucosamine HCl. I purchase it from the same place as above. Powder form again. Cheap! You need about 1.5g per day, half in the morning half at night. There are some other anti-inflammatory herbs that I like a lot, but the above will get you started. Good luck to you!!!
