you will not pull more weight with a fat bar than with a reg bar, so if your not pulling more weight how will that help your grip. DL's with bands will do more for your grip and lock-out than anything else. You have to find a way to pull max plus weight to develop your grip. Your bar weight may not be max plus, but when the bands kick in at your knee's it will be and that's how the grip strengthens! Hey Jim, Your grip will strengthen whether or not you are lifting more weight with the thick bar. It is simply the effect of putting your hands in such a position as to hold a bar with a bigger diameter that strengthens them. Your hands will be in a position of stress, and will be having difficulty trying to get a grip on the bar, and for this reason they strengthen. The weight one uses on a normal deadlift should never be compared to the weight used on a thick bar, they are two entirely different things. Thick bar work will strengthen the grip. I am not sure though whether the thick bar sort of grip strength would be useful for powerlifting.

Hey Santa: That's why we use a fat bar on all or parts of day's 3,5,8&10, to strengthen the bench grip. Deadliftng with a fatbar will do nothing for your dl grip, you will pull substantially less weight with a fatbar than a reg bar and therefore will do nothing to benefit your dl grip, especially when maxing. Again, you have grip problems when deadlifting, weighted pull-ups and heavy bands with a dl bar on your ME day will correct that weakness!
