When tucking the elbows and rowing the bar down to your upper abs, it puts alot of stress on the wrists. Guys tend to dump the bar at first until there wrist strengthen, no amount of wrist wrap will help. 2 things I do, I find training with a fat bar has helped and in time as you build up the band tension on ME bench day, these two things will strengthen the wrists.
Wrists Wraps: None of you should be wearing wrists wraps at all on days 5&10. On day 3, only on your set to failure and touch set, none of your warm-ups or speed work. On day 8: Maybe on your last warm-up and ME set, not at all on Inc or Dec. How can you strengthen your wrists, if you are constantly putting on wrist wraps. I tell you this, when doing your pull-ups, you better not be training with wrist straps!

I'm getting ready to plan day#5 of my first cycle-but I don't have a fat-bar yet, is there any type of substitute for this piece of equip? Should I still go ahead w/out it? Again any input is helpful. Thanks

Go ahead without it. I don't have one and I've put 100 pounds on my bench in less than a year.

I ended up proceeding in my work-out (Day #5 -!st Cycle) as Dennis said (see above)-thanks man. I recently was able to get an approx 2" pipe that I cut to size and slid onto a regular Olympic bar-after removing one end. It's not the cadillac of lifting bars and there is some roll to the grip, but it seems to work well. Do you guys see any potential benefits/problems with this? Any feedback is helpful and appreciated!

no problem, the sole purpose of the fat bar as I have found is to develop the wrist strength and grip for your regular bar bench. When tucking the elbows in and rowing the bar to your upper abs, your wrists have to be very strong to keep the bar in the groove, weak wrists even with wrist wraps on, you'll dump the bar!

you will not pull more weight with a fat bar than with a reg bar, so if your not pulling more weight how will that help your grip. DL's with bands will do more for your grip and lock-out than anything else. You have to find a way to pull max plus weight to develop your grip. Your bar weight may not be max plus, but when the bands kick in at your knee's it will be and that's how the grip strengthens!
