several years ago I did good mornings with bands doubled from the bottom of the rack. After a while I realized that GM's with bands was not effective because as you would bend over the band tension would lessen thus defeating the purpose of the GM's. So, I went back to just free weight. Then I stopped doing them all together because, 1. I got lazy and 2. I thought I was doing to much assistance work which was impeding my rest & recovery.
One of my training partner's was shown a certain way of doing GM's with bands by a guy at Gold's gym that we know. I didn't like his specific way but it got us thinking, what if we hang the bands from the top of the rack, wrap them twice like we do for the deadlift, stick a bar through the bands and then do the GM's. By hanging the bands from the top as you bend over you will stretch the bands. Problem with that was, it was like doing a reverse band bench, the bands from the top wanted to pull the bar off your back. So then my partner suggested doubling a set of bands from the bottom up to the bar. So, we had bands from the top wrapped twice and hooked to the bar then we doubled bands from the bottom up to the bar.
Let me tell you guys something, this set up is the most intense way of doing a GM, your low back and hammies get worked big time. No matter what part of the GM that you are doing you are always against tension. As you are bending over you are stretching the top bands down and when you reverse and come back up you are pulling against the bands from the bottom, my low back and hammies were screaming. We are going to incorporate these on ME squat day.
